An Experimental Study on Korean Vowels Phoeme in Relation to Palatal Plate Thickness by Sonagraph

Abstract
Sonagraph was used to study and compare the variation in speech articulation of 8 Korean Vowels of a(/¡Æ}/), a(/¡Æ3 /)¢¥ o(/9/), u(/4-/), I(/¡ÆI/), e(/¡Æ11/) and ee(/o]/) in relation to three different palatal plates thickness of 0.6mm, 1.2mm and 2.4mm.
By ratio of Formant frequency which were drived from Sonagram pattern, the phonemic parameter and vowel phonemic graphs were formed.
The following results were obtained by analyzing these vowel phonemic graphs.
1. In vowel phonemic graphs, the relative position of tongue tends remarkably to move posteriorly and inferiorly by the insertion of palatal plates.
2. Front vowels were more affected by plates than back vowels.
3. It is proved that phonetic observation in dentistry is also possible by use of simple vowel
phoneme change in lieu of consonants which are difficult to approach phonetically.
4. By phonemic graphs it is possible to observe even small change of sound itself in view of phonemic parameter which is not detectable on Sonagram pattern.
5. Thinner plate caused lessened distortion-of speech articulation.
6. The phonemic graphs showed a significant relationship between the change of the relative position of tongue and phonemic change in relation to palatal plate thickness.
